Description

Shows tall, straight cabbage trees, with the outline of pohutukawa trees in the background

The Puhoi Reserve was created by the Crown in 1853 and divided into ten blocks. Auckland businessman and politician Robert Graham bought 70 acres of the land and built a modest homestead on it, naming it Wenderholm. By the 1870s, visitors to the Waiwera thermal resort were invited to visit Wenderholm and its surrounds. During the depression of the 1880s, Graham sold Wenderholm to a land agent called Robert Greenwood, who decided to subdivide the property in order to create a luxury holiday resort called the Greenwood Estate. The plan did not come to fruition, and he sold the property in two pieces in 1885. Today the area is known as Wenderholm Regional Park. The Wenderholm homestead was rebuilt over the years, and from circa 1940 is known as Couldrey House.
