Description

Volume is a chronicle written by Marsack drawing on the details recorded in his personal World War Two diaries. It is a bound typed transcription with the title `Staff Officer Q'. The narrative is comprised of three parts and includes appendices. Includes verbatim extracts from the original diaries. Marsack provides a very detailed account of his war service as a quartermaster with Army Head Quarters Staff in the 2nd NZEF. Marsack's first position was as a ship's quartermaster and assistant to the convoy Quarter Master Major Allan Muir. Marsack details his role regarding the logistics and organisation of the men, equipment and travel of the New Zealand Army from New Zealand to England. Included in his descriptions are details of life on board the troopships, stop-overs in visiting ports, army characters and office gossip and politics. Marsack travelled widely in his role and reports on visits to Sydney, Freemantle, South Africa, London, Bombay, Colombo, Singapore, Italy, Egypt, France and Venice. In the latter period of the war Marsack transferred to the field war gaining a placement at Army Headquarters in the Maadi Camp in Egypt. In May 1945 Marsack received a magisterial appointment in Palmerston North and returned to New Zealand after a visit to Venice on furlough.

Enclosures - At page 167 is a photograph "Nieuw Amsterdam, 8.2.14" Names of soldiers are written on the back of the photograph. [Transferred to the Photographic Archive]. Page 201 includes a certificate of discharge from hospital for Marsack.
