Description

The recto begins with the concluding portion of the antiphon at the magnificat for the Feast of the imprinting of the holy stigmata on St Francis: Crucis apparet, hostia tensis in Cruce brachiis, sex alis tecta variis cum vultus elegantia: quae Francisci cor attrahit augens ei charismata, suaque sacra Stigmata in eius carne protrahit. The verso begins with the antiphon for Vespers for the Dedication of St Michael, the Archangel: Stetit angelus iuxta aram templi habens turibulum aureum in manu sua.

The text for the antiphon on the verso is from Revelation 8:3.

Music in square chant notation, with red 4-line staves and moveable C and F clefs.

Later-added pencil number 1388 on the recto on lower right-hand corner.

Physical Description: Vellum, single leaf, 615 x 435 mm Contemporary vellum infill along spine edge.

Provenance: Executed possibly in Tuscany, perhaps Florence, in the last quarter of the 15th century.

Verso has a large illuminated letter 'S' in foliate design in pink, green, blue, yellow, and orange with white tracery on a burnished gold ground. Marginal extension of acanthus-like foliage with bezants and single hair-line embellishment. Includes three further smaller letters decorated in black and with black penwork.
