Description

Photographic prints of images from a roll of film taken in circa 1992 and April 1992 by Judith Binney, during her research into the life of Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki, particularly in relation into the Ringatu Church. Some images unidentified.

Corresponding negatives at 35mm-98830 to 98839.

Three were taken at the Whiritoa headland, Hauraki district, which was a Ringatu settlement. Two of these feature Peter Ellis and Connie Huitoroa.

Two show Mataora Bay, also formerly a Ringatu settlement.

Three show the remains of a Ringatu church-house called Hurae (July) at Paritu (now part of Opoutere on the Wharekawa estuary).

Five images show the whalebone mere held by the Bryce family and said to have been given by Te Kooti to Native Minister John Bryce on the occasion of his pardon on 12 February 1883.

Three show an undated painting of Te Kooti, entitled 'Retreat from Ngatapa 1869' by Frank Davis.

Accompanying information - Some prints have descriptions by Binney on the backs. The paper packet that originally held prints and negatives, has descriptive notes by Binney and is held at PAColl-9928-08.
