Description

Volume begins for 1943 in the middle pages of the diary, continues to the end then begins again at the front of the diary in the lower half of the page. Diary covers military life during embarkation from Wellington and the voyage to Egypt. Cargill recounts daily life and also records the books he has read on the journey. Describes activities while training in camp and day trips to local sights and visits to the Army dentist. Involved in the Western Allies invasion of Italy in September 1943. Describes various military attacks his unit is involved in. Received a head wound fighting in Cassino and recounts his recuperation in an American Army hospital. Transferred to a general hospital in Naples and details life as a patient. Cargill is discharged from hospital but continues on as a carpenter working to the Command Sergeant Major.

Diary includes birthdays, addresses and song lyrics.
