A view looking north from the south side of the mouth of the Hokitika River, known as South Spit. In the foreground on the sand can be seen a number of broken tree stumps; in the distance, across the river mouth, is the township, with a flagstaff at the town's edge. The heavy cloud bank has a distinct pink hue, suggesting early morning
