Description

Shows President Sukarno of Indonesia being counselled by the ghost of Adolf Hitler. Hitler is saying that the New Zealand man (Prime Minister Keith Holyoake) entering his office is "not just the simple country lad he looks". A map on the wall shows Maphilindo, a proposed confederation of Malay states - Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia. Discarded peace treaties lie in the wastebasket beside Sukarno. Context: New Zealand joined forces with British and Australian SAS soldiers to fight the Indonesian insurgency against Malaysia.

Handwitten text on verso reads 'Mark my words, no Kiwi is the simple country lad he looks'.

Maphilindo was proposed in the early 1960s to unite all the Malay peoples of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philipines into one nations state. Sukarno of Indonesia disagreed with the proposal and created a confrontation with Malaya to kill the idea. What role New Zealand had in this is unknown.
