Description

View from Eccleston Hill (then Golders Hill) showing first St Paul's Church, built 1844, in Government Reserve and back and side of Colonel Wakefield's house with flagstaff. Ships and boats of varying sizes are anchored in the harbour, and a small pier can be seen jutting from Lambton Quay. To the right of the church other houses are nestled into the bush and hillside

Very similar view to 'Wellington, ca 1845' (A-090-007), also attributed to Robert Park, and taken from almost the same aspect, but displaying a more panoramic view. This view has been executed in a different season, as the same trees, which are bare in the other view, are leafy here

Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - [Illegible initials; 1851? in pencil]; Verso - top left - To Uncle Jim with N Zealand Charlie's love / The third house from the church is ours which we occupied a part of f[ro]m 6 months after commencing business --; Verso - bottom right - View of Port Nicholson from a hill above Government-house, showing Mt Victoria, Mt Albert, part of Te Aro flat [+ bush?] Governmnet-house + Thorndon Church
