Description

Preliminary painting for an advertising poster shows a European man in a pith helmet and white suit gazing into the eyes of a smiling Polynesian woman in a grass skirt. They stand on a beach between palm trees. The woman is peeling a banana, and the man is holding a cigar which has inadvertently caught light to the woman's grass skirt. At the left, a crab has climbed partway up a palm tree trunk and is about to take a folded copy of the Auckland Star from the man's back pocket.

The word "Unfinished" appears at lower right, indicating that the painting was not completed.
