Artist unknown :Cadu. [ca 1810]
- Date
- 1800 - 1820
- Reference
- A-452-013
- Description
Shows a head-and-shoulders profile of a dark-skinned man, with long hair pulled into a tight top-knot and a small beard. He wears a white, high-collared shirt with puffed sleeves and a dark, high-collared waistcoat typical of early 19th-century European fashion. His earlobes are extremely elongated
It is reasonable to suggest that this man is a native of Easter Island. A number of other images in the Library's collection show views of men with extensive holes in the ear lobes, though they are dressed more traditionally. (See ref A-054-014 and C-051-007 as examples). The name 'Cadu' can also refer to a shortened form of Carlos Eduardo
