Head-and-shoulders portrait of what is supposed to be an indigenous Brazilian, who displays Maori-style moko over all his face, except his nose. The man has shoulder-length wavy hair, and looks off to his left
It is not certain whether Arago intended this to be a portrait of an indigenous Brazilian or a Maori. He encountered Maori while in Sydney in 1819; an image of one man appears in his travel narrative, and the Library has an unbound copy at A-010-051. By the time of publication, Arago had lost his sight, and his ability to identify images accurately would have been significantly impaired
