Description

Folder comprises an incomplete report of Captain Gilbert Mair and the Arawa Flying Column's search for Rongowhakaata leader Te Kooti and his followers in the Urewera Mountains. The narrative details the Arawa Flying Column's movements as they track Te Kooti to the Hauhaus' fortified camp at Waipaoa in 1871. Details are provided of the attack, and the near capture of Te Kooti by Captain Mair.

Manuscript continues with details of the capture of Te Kooti's follower Wi Heretaunga and his execution by the Arawa soldier Sergeant Kepa Te Ahuru (who was also Heretaunga's nephew). Page 11 ends mid sentence. Document is annotated confidential on each page.

This report appears to be a literary draft for Petersen and Anderson's publication `The Mair family' published by A H & A W Reed, Wellington, 1956.

Gilbert Mair was a surveyor, interpreter and soldier. Captain of the Arawa Flying Column engaged in the campaign pursuing Te Kooti and the Hauhau in the 1870s. Peterson and J C Anderson co-wrote `The Mair family', published in 1956.
