Orignal manuscript created in Northern Netherlands in the final quarter of the 15th century.

Collation of original manuscript: i8 [of 8, lacking i] ii-ix8, x7 [iv is a single sheet], xi-xviii8, xix7 [ii is a single sheet], xx-xxiii8; lacking a leaf at the beginning but gatherings 10 and 19 seem to be complete. Single column, 19-21 lines (mostly 20 lines), ruled in fine black ink, written space 90 x 63 mm, text written in Dutch on vellum in black ink in a calligraphic gothic bookhand, rubrics in red; capitals touched in red.

Binding of original: brown mottled sheepskin, probably 18th century, blind tooled.

Decoration of original: Approximately 36 initials (2-5 line, mostly 3-line) in blue with red penwork usually extending up and down the margins; six larger decorated initials (one 6-line, others 5-line) in divided red and blue with penwork in both colours; three decorated initials: an 8-line initial 'O' (f.19) in red and blue with tracery in white and liquid gold on a cusped burnished gold ground with a border of soft coloured acanthus leaves and gold bezants infilled with tiny brown dots; a 7-line initial 'O' (f.50v) in burnished gold on a red-brown ground with white tracery and with a 2-sided border of red penwork infilled with green dots; and a 5-line initial 'O' (f.54v) in burnished gold on a red-brown ground with white tracery and with a 2-sided border in red and blue with green dots.

Provenance of original: 19th century armorial bookplate of Charles Robert des Ruffieres; sold from the estate of Ruffieres at Sotheby's, 4 March 1899, lot 1755, to Dobell. 20th century pictorial bookplate of E.C. Simpson; remained in family following Simpson's death; sold at Dunbar Sloane Wellington auction 22 April 2009, lot 147, purchased by the Alexander Turnbull Library. Acc. 401379.
