Discusses how school playground designers have changed they way they think about outdoor spaces for children over the last few decades. Talks about the importance of play, exploration and imagination in a child's development and how garden play areas can be designed to encourage this. Comments that children's play behaviour is affected by the environment around them. Examples Rangitoto College garden, which was designed to provide a tranquil setting for quiet reflection, outdoor learning and for students to gather in small groups, and represents a significant investment from the college's fund.
