Description

Shows a hand holding the Olympic torch, radiating light on the five rings, the symbol of the continents involved in the Games. Two phrases are quoted as part of the image: 'The Games must go on', by Avery Brundage, and '...but if once we lose this light, 'tis with us perpetual night', by Ben Jonson

This cartoon refers to the 'Munich Massacre' which took place on 5 September 1972, and which left a total of 17 people dead, including 11 Israeli athletes and coaches, five members of the Palestinian Black September group, and one West German police officer. The president of the International Olympic Committee, Avery Brundage, insisted that the Games continue. The Ben Jonson (1572-1637) quote comes from 'Volpone', one of the writer's greatest works, first produced in 1605
