Description

Photographs of the prisoner-of-war camp Featherston, 1942-1945. These include views of the buildings, New Zealand military personel, and groups of Japanese pows, some of them identified. Many of the photographs were taken by John Pascoe.

The rest of the album relates to Eric Thompson's connection with ex Japanese pows from the early 1970s to 1986. These include visits to New Zealand by some of the ex prisoners of war. One of the outcomes of this interaction was the presentation of a bronze memorial plaque by Japanese veterans which was set in the Featherston military camp memorial park. The plaque commemorated, particularly those Japanese prisoners of war killed by new Zealand guards on 25 February 1943. This was followed in 1986 by an Ireisai, a ceremony for the consolation of the spirits of the dead, which was performed at Featherston by a Japanese priest, Mr Adachi.
