- Description
The interior of Putiki Pa, Whanganui River, showing adults and children including a mother breastfeeding her baby in the foreground, storehouses and eating and sleeping houses, dogs and pigs, the palisades of the pa in the background, trees (including cabbage trees) and hills beyond.
Impressed into the wooden frame on either side of the image: W E & F Newton, opticians & globemakers to the Queen, 3 Fleet St Temple Bar London
The glass painting is most likely to have been taken from W J Tyrone Power's lithograph of this image, which was published in his Sketches in New Zealand with pen and pencil (London: Longman & Co, 1849), it in turn taken from J A Gilfillan's watercolour dated 1847. Although the inscription on the plate gives W T Power as the artist of the original work, Gilfillan's watercolour is undoubtedly the work used by the engraver. It would appear that the reverse of the slide is the correct orientation of the image
