Description

News and personal photographs, taken and collected by J L Wilson, featuring North Canterbury 1868-1916, predominantly dated 1899-1909.

Series include: testing the Kaiapoi river dredge and associated luncheon at Oddfellows hall; scenes from Rangiora (gas works, Victoria Park, High Street, Borough Council, Magistrate's Court); Wilson family photographs, including Leonard Wilson and family, Mr and Mrs J L Wilson and mother-in-law Emma Matthews, various outings, and Jamie's first day at school; collected images of North Island scenes (Huntly, Ohakune, Raurimu, Paekakariki, Hamilton); honorary Colonel Lady Plunket presenting colours to Amuri Mounted Rifles at Culverdon, with Colonel Davies, Lieutenant Colonel Hawkins, Lieutenant Northcote (also visit to Kaiapoi Domain and Horsley Down); Kaiapoi scenes (J Beswick's store, Woollen store, ferry, High Street, Cam Road, road bridge, ketch courier, suspension bridge, Charles Street, Raven Street); fancy dress on the SS 'Runic'; and military cadets parading at Rangiora and Lancaster Park.

Events include train derailment at Sefton, unveiling of the Kiapohia monument, opening of runanga hall (Tuahiwi), Estelle Wilson's marriage to Oram, party celebrating opening of new Woollen Mills warehouse (Manchester Street, Christchurch), Arbour Day at Kaiapoi Domain, laying of the foundation stone of the Otira Tunnel (Booth, Reese, Howland, Moore, Kaye, Quane, [Lorrison?], Allen, Forster, Williams, and Dobson), Buss farewell garden party at McFarlane's (Rangiora), Lincoln College prize day, Grace and Stead wedding, unidentified Maori wedding, 1901 royal visit (Christchurch), Antarctic expedition garden party at J Kinsey's, Governor Plunket's visit (Waimate), banquet honouring R J Seddon (London), and fire at Woollen Mills costume and cap factory (Cashel Street, Christchurch).

Named figures include E W Ralph and his daughter, T Turnbull (in garden at Beauthorne with J L Wilson), Mr A G Ashby, C Moody (on horseback), Mr and Mrs Millar with E Parham, and Makumaku. Group photographs include: Pearce, R Moore, T Wilson, J L Wilson, and C J Cox outside Kaiapoi Press office; Sir John Hall and executive committee of the Christchurch exhibition; E Wildon (president) and Christchurch Golf Club; veterans Perrin, Lane, Dudson, Wright, Bannister, and McDonald outside Kaiapoi Working Men's Club; Kaiapoi Shipping Company promoters; reunion of 'Glentanner' shipmates; Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Committee; Blackwell family; and competitors in North Canterbury ploughing match (W Cunningham's farm).

Buildings include Press Newspaper offices (Cashel Street and Cathedral Square), Kaiapoi Woollen Mills (exterior and engine room interior), Kaiapoi Shipping Company premises, Leonard Wilson's greenhouse and conservatory, Christchurch Post Office, St Mary's Church (Timaru), Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament (Christchurch), Mrs Emma Matthew's cottage, and Horsley Down church.

Miscellaneous images include white swans at Kaiapoi Domain, a bunch of bananas, workers and children during harvesting oats at Geo Chilton's farm (Southland), avenue in Samoa, harvesting fleet at Gould and Cameron's farm (Canterbury Plains), repairing overhead wires on for trams (Christchurch), girls in costume (bazaar at King Edward's barracks), Empire Bridge wash out, Timaru penny, R J Alexander memorial (Kaiapoi), Waimakariri Gorge rail bridge, children riding cow, coach at Bealey (West Coast road), Rolleston River bridge, SS 'Wootton' and SS 'Kairaki' (Kaiapoi), Boy Scouts at Woodend, and Queen Victoria monument (Kaiapoi).

Postcards include Fairfield Freezing Works and scenes from the United Kingdom (some are hand coloured). Illustration of earthquake and tidal wave (South America, 1867). Also newspaper clippings of fire at Woollen Mill's Men's hostel (Kaiapoi) and shipmates from 'Chariot of Fame' at jubilee. Burton Brothers named photographers of some collected images. Also contains Wises 1895 hand coloured and annotated map of Kaiapoi.
