- Description
Electronic document comprises Walker's transcript (2011) of James Wansbrough's 1867 shipboard journal `The diary of a voyage from London to the Port of Otago in New Zealand'. Also transcribed is Wansbrough's covering letter which accompanied his diary; digitised scan of the first page of the diary and an example of Wansbrough's signature; digitised photograph of Wansbrough in older age; editor's notes and appendices.
Transcription includes details of the Wansbrough family members travelling to New Zealand aboard the `Lady Egidia'. Diary records the daily navigational position of the vessel during her voyage, weather conditions, meals aboard ship, family activities and the general business of life at sea. The writing is very engaging and includes snippets of songs and poetry. Warnbrough preaches on Sundays and leads the shipboard congregation in divine songs. Stewart Island is sighted on Friday 26 July, and Port Chalmers reached with disembarkation on 28 July. The voyage lasted 87 days.
