Description

News and personal photographs taken and collected by J L Wilson featuring North Canterbury 1861-1900s, predominantly dated 1880s-1900.

Series include the visit of Lord Ranfurly to Kaiapoi and Rangiora (receptions, visits, and events), sheepdog trials at Waikari (participants, location, and spectators), sheep mustered for shearing as well as farmland at Whiterock Station, Seymore Family portraits, Woollen Mills interior, Paura Taki (mainly his funeral), and unidentified Maori portraits.

Named figures include J L Wilson, J S Guthrie, G R Hart, Mr and Mrs Henry Beal of Eyretown, son of Mr J M Verral of Swannanoa with kittens, Mr Thomas and Mr Chapman of Mt Palm, Eastwood, Pine, Wilson, James C Roll, Annie Lynskey, Thomas Wilson with pony, Mrs Andrews and Mrs Headington (Oxfordshire), Mr and Mrs W Patersen, Sheenan the Amberley Murderer, and Mr and Mrs W Vaughn, Mr and Mrs Brydon, and Mr Denton in a horse drawn cart. Group photographs include Mayor of Rangiora H Blackett and council (1878), Press newspaper picnics at Mr Chadwick's (Fendalton) and in Cashmere, Christchurch Ladies Golf Club, North Canterbury Caledonian Society Officials (Amberley), foremen of departments at Kaiapoi Woollen Mills, staff of Mason Struthers with Mr R Struthers, Kaiapoi Girl's Hockey Club with Rev H H Mathias and Mrs H Compton Parson (president), J Millar and helpers for Kaiapoi Bazaar, Kaiapoi Fire Brigade, literary staff of Press, Kaiapoi Methodist Church Choir and Rev H Blackwell, Rangiora Sports Committee, Teacher's Association members, and C Simpson wedding. Many local families are depicted in front of homesteads and houses, with identified groups and locations including: John Barlow's house (Ashburton), T Millor's house (Kaiapoi), W C Nicholl's Whiterock homestead, residence of E Mulcock (Flaxton), H J Horrell and family at Horrelville, R Bowles house (Timaru), H B Lane's residence Escott (Waikari), C J Wentworth Cookson's Ashley residence. Also [Wilson?] family, including Estelle, and Nilson family with Mr Matthews and Miss Barlow, both at Marston.

Contains extensive coverage of Kaiapoi buildings including Drill House, Pier Hotel and stables (Charles St), J Ironside Blacksmith (Raven St), Borough School, Borough Council, J Beswick's store (Rowen St), Bank of New Zealand (BNZ), Working Men's Club, Methodist Church interior (Easter decorations), J L Wilson's Press office, toll house at bridge, court house, and post office. Many images include unidentified groups of people in street scenes. Rangiora buildings include Railway Station, Mark Scott's Junction Hotel interior (dining table set for Governor Ranfurly's visit), and interior of Dr Gordon's surgery. Christchurch buildings include Board of Education, former residence of J E Fitzgerald and second office of Press Newspaper (with hand coloured Union Jack), Trinity Congregational Church, and Cathedral. Other buildings include Teviotdale woolshed and yards, Mt Morgan Goldmine, St Stephen's Church (Tuahiwi), D Church Collar and Harness makers and Hean's refreshments rooms, Karetu hut at Birdseye Creek, James Douglas' residence (Waikari), and house and yards at Dungeon Creek. Also two unidentified churches [Christchurch?].

Events include Queen Victoria Jubilee celebrations (Rangiora and Kaiapoi) including parade and preparation of roast bullock, laying the foundation stone at Morrow, Basset and Co store (Cashel St, Christchurch), funeral of Mrs Wickitoria Mutu at Tuahiwi, laying of foundation of Ngai Tahu monument at Kaiapohia, crowd at wedding of Bishop Wilson of Melanesia (Cathedral Square, Christchurch), unveiling of Queen Victoria memorial by Mayor J Daly (Kaiapoi), Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Show, and Governor Glasgow at Canterbury A & P Show.

Miscellaneous images include various rural and scenic scenes including Lake Mason, Weka Pass (limestone and viaduct), Mt Cook, Avon River, Lake Taylor, Okuku River, Hurunui lake country, Papanui churchyard (monument to Captain C Whiteford), Lake Katrine and The Brothers, boating on Lake Sumner, Purau volunteer rifle camp site, United Steam Ship Company steamship carrying excursionists, land clearance, cycling, cow belonging to Mr G Milne of Fernside, Brackenfield hounds, camping, and boat 'Emma Sims'.

Contains illustrations entitled 'The fox and the geese', 'Our remote ancestors' (birds and primates), photomechanical print of Waiau traffic bridge, and a drawing of Sydney Technological Museum. Postcards show Chatsworth House (England) and Venice. Also loose postcards from daughter Estelle sent to her father from Grahamstown, South Africa. Collected portraits feature a Tahitian man and studio portrait of women and girls.
