"Ka" 949, a K class locomotive, 4-8-4 type, photographed circa 1947 to 1949, after being equipped for oil-firing, by an unidentified photographer for New Zealand Railways. This image is a film negative taken by Albert Percy Godber from the NZR print in Godber Album Vol 108, p 125 (PA1-q-101).

Date supplied by library client who pointed out that the conversion to oil firing, and the white numbers on the headstock happened after its overhaul between February and May 1947.
Inscriptions: Album page - Ka Oilburner. N.Z.R.; Album page - Tangiwai. Train that was involved in the accident of 1953, Christmas. (Inscription in pencil, added after Godber's death)
"Ka" 949 was built in 1939 (maker's no. 332/39) by New Zealand Railways, Hutt Workshops, went into service in October 1939, and was scrapped in 1955 as a result of damage sustained in the disastrous Tangiwai accident.
