Description

Photograph of the Kopuawhara No. 3 Camp, a public works administration camp beside the Kopuawhara Stream. Shows cabins in the Camp and the surrounding river valley. Photograph taken in 1938 by an unidentified photographer.

A number of bodies of victims of the flood disaster that struck the Kopuawhara No. 4 public works camp were also found at this main administration camp. The Kopuawhara No. 4 public works camp was one of a series of camps set up for construction workers building the Wairoa-Gisborne railway. It was located on the banks of the Kopuawhara Stream, which flooded the camp with a five-metre wall of water in the morning of February 19 1938. Some flats in the No. 3 camp were also covered with driftwood.
