Description

Captain Samuel Wallis' ship the Dolphin and three Tongan canoes, one with a sail, shown against a background of an atoll with a tall hill divided down its centre with a row of trees. Flat land extends to the left. Trees line the nearer shore on the right.

Keppel Island is now known as Nuiatoputapu, part of the Nuiatoputapu Group in Tonga. Dutch explorers named it Cocos Eylant (Coconut Island) in 1616

The artist Samuel Wallis was Captain of the ship 'Dolphin' and the first European to encounter the Tuamotu Archipelago and the Society Islands in 1767. His crew went ashore at Keppel Island, Tonga, on 13 August 1767.
