A man wearing an apron and waving a dishmop complains to his wife that just because she is now earning more than he is it does not mean that he has to take a subordinate role in the household, i.e. performing all the household duties. His wife is smiling happily, relaxing in an easy chair in the sitting room, reading the newspaper, with a glass of beer and a free-standing ashtray beside her. Another, older woman, is sitting opposite her reading a magazine, also looking smug. At top left of the cartoon is quoted the headline 'State pay rise puts typist above the tradesman'.
