Date: 1860 - 1990 - 1869

From: Various artists :Encounter with Eden ; cards / Wellington, National Library of New Zealand, 1990

Reference: E-279-q-123

Description: Reproduction of a watercolour by an unknown artist, produced for `Encounter with Eden', an exhibition of paintings and drawings from the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. One of a set of six greeting cards produced by the National Library of New Zealand featuring works of art from the exhibition. Neither the location of the kainga nor its artist are certain. Its most likely situation is the Waikato River where swampy ground enables the kahikatea to grow to the enormous height seen in the cetral clump of trees. One possible artist is John Kinder. Many elements of the style are reminiscent of his work, including the ethereal floating quality. There are similarities in one of is photographs, dated 1862, showing Te la, the old landing place on the waikato near Maungatawhiri military post. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph 85 x 133 mm on folded card

Description: Reproduction of a watercolour by Charles Heaphy, produced for `Encounter with Eden', an exhibition of paintings and drawings from the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. One of a set of six greeting cards produced by the National Library of New Zealand featuring works of art from the exhibition. Very similar to a watercolour in the Alexander Turnbull Library called `Bream Head, Whangarei'. However Bream Head is some distance to the right and this is Manaia. The schooner may be imaginery, as Heaphy was fond of adding touches of human interest. Several Maori waka can be seen near the shore. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph 85 x 133 mm on folded card

Description: Reproduction of a pencil and watercolour painting by Warre, produced for `Encounter with Eden', an exhibition of paintings and drawings from the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. One of a set of six greeting cards produced by the National Library of New Zealand featuring works of art from the exhibition. View from Government House looking towards the Waitemata Harbour, North Head and Rangitoto. The group on the lawn is likely to be Mrs Gore Brown and family, perhaps witha nursemaid. Artist H J Warre must have drawn this scene on arrival in New zealand while he was the recipient of hospitality from the Governor, fellow-soldier Colenl Gore Browne. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph 85 x 133 mm on folded card

From: Various artists :Encounter with Eden ; cards / Wellington, National Library of New Zealand, 1990

By: Bunney, John Wharlton, 1828-1882

Reference: E-279-q-125

Description: Reproduction of a pencil and watercolour painting by Bunney, produced for `Encounter with Eden', an exhibition of paintings and drawings from the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. One of a set of six greeting cards produced by the National Library of New Zealand featuring works of art from the exhibition. View of Lyttelton from Mount Pleasant appears to be a copy of an earlier ink drawing by Edmund Norman. There is no evidence that John Bunney, a middle-ranking English artist, ever visited New Zealand. It seems likely that his watercolours were commissioned by New Zealand colonising interests in London to encourage emigration, and the emphasis was therefore on well-developed, orderly and fertile settlements. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph 85 x 133 mm on folded card

From: Various artists :Encounter with Eden ; cards / Wellington, National Library of New Zealand, 1990

By: Percival, H, active 1875-1910

Reference: E-279-q-128

Description: Reproduction of a watercolour by H Percival, produced for `Encounter with Eden', an exhibition of paintings and drawings from the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. One of a set of six greeting cards produced by the National Library of New Zealand featuring works of art from the exhibition. The artist was a Liverpool ship portraitist. There were two sailing ships called the Otago. This is the larger vessel of 993 tons, built in 1869 in Glasgow for the New Zealand Government to carry immigrants to the South Island. She made regular runs between Britain and New Zealand until 1889 and is shown here rigged as a barque, for one of her passages to Lyttelton in 1887. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph 85 x 133 mm on folded card

From: Various artists :Encounter with Eden ; cards / Wellington, National Library of New Zealand, 1990

By: Strutt, William, 1825-1915

Reference: E-279-q-126

Description: Reproduction of an oil painting by William Strutt produced for `Encounter with Eden', an exhibition of paintings and drawings from the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. One of a set of six greeting cards produced by the National Library of New Zealand featuring works of art from the exhibition. The painting is reminiscent of the Holy Family. The baby was Albert Victor Pomare to whom Queen Victoria became godmother while his aprents, Hariata Tutapuiti and Hare Pomare were visiting England. The figure behind the young family is their uncle, Patuone, who was some twelve thousand miles away in New Zealand. Mount Taranaki forms an unlikely background to this group portrait of Northland Maori. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph 85 x 133 mm on folded card
