Cabbage trees and flaxes amongst large rocks on the banks of Lake Pupuke with further trees on a spur of land across the water. Rangitoto Island is in the background. The view is from Auckland's North Shore
Mary Bartley (later Stafford) lived at Northcote on Auckland's North Shore. She married Edward Stafford in 1859, the year before Hoyte arrived in Auckland. Dr Carl Fischer, a fellow-artist, also lived at Takapuna on the shores of Lake Pupuke.
Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Signed: J. Hoyte; Recto - "Scene in N. Zealand (near Auckland) near where Mary Bartley lived" [on label beneath the work. The title is taken from the original mount, now discarded
