Description

Powhiri (official welcoming ceremony) for Governor Sir William Jervois, Lady Jervois, and party (Miss A Jervois, Reverend W Jervois, Miss A Richmond, and Major C V Eccles) at Omiti, a Ngati Pare kainga, on Kawhia Harbour. Welcome issued by chiefs of Ngati Hikairo, Hone Te One, Te Huki (Hone Wetere), Pikia Haurua, Tiki Taimana (Rihare Tauwhare), and Tetahi Rahi (or Te Tihirahi) of Ngati Haua. Shows a scene outside the homestead of Te Huki Hone Wetere at Omiti, where a group of Maori are seated under the verandah. On the left, Maori chief Te Huki (Hone Wetere) holds a taiaha. The Governor, and his group, including Hone Kaora of Ngati Hikairo (wearing a bowler hat with a white band) are on the right. Hone Te One is seated on the verandah to the back. The guests arrived on the S S Hinemoa at 4pm and left at 6pm. At this time the Government was negotiating with five tribes, Ngati Hikairo, Ngati Maniapoto, Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Tuwharetoa and Whanganui, regarding the Rohe Potae pact.
