McDonnell underwent training at Trentham Camp until the beginning of June when he departed from Wellington aboard the `Remuera' with the 39th Reinforcements of the NZEF. He sailed to England via the Panama Canal and Canada, arriving at Brocton Camp near Stafford, England where he joined the New Zealand Rifle Brigade in August.
