Description

Group portrait of the No 1 Company outside the Hampton House mansion that served as a billet for the New Zealand Discharge Depot during World War I. The group is positioned in front of an ivy-clad house with a castellated entrance. Photograph taken at Torquay, England, circa 1918 by Thomas Frederick Scales.

Hampton House quartered New Zealand soldiers classified as permanently unfit and awaiting discharge. No 1 Company comprised soldiers who were to disembark at Auckland. Torquay was the New Zealand Discharge Depot.
