- Description
On a rock, the broad-brimmed hat belonging to one of Mantell's party squashed after being sat on. To the left of the rock are a pipe and a knife stuck into the ground. A sketch of a Moeraki chief; another Maori man, seen in profile, wearing a broad-brimmed hat. Malmanche or Wills (dressed in the hat shown squashed in the left-hand drawing) looking through a theodolite at distant hills. Two men, probably Wills and Mantell taking bearings with a theodolite across a river. One of them is having to stand in the river. The title for this drawing is 'cruelty to animals'. A whata or food storage platform, presumably in the pa and whaling settlement at Moeraki.
