Description

Houses at 372 and 378 Karori Road, Karori, Wellington. In the centre, obscured by trees, is 378, the original home of Stephen Lancaster, quarryman and first mayor of Karori Borough. The large house is 372, Chesney Wold, the house that he built in 1866. Photograph taken early 1870s by James Francis Meadows (1851-1900).

Chesney Wold was leased in 1893 by Harold Beauchamp and later renovated. His daughter, New Zealand author Katherine Mansfield, lived here 1893-1898.

James Francis Meadows maintained a photographic studio in Cuba street, Wellington, ca 1870-1874.
