Description

View of Te Aroha, looking down on a small group of horses and riders stopping to talk on the corner of Whitaker Street and Bridge Street (now Lawrence Avenue). Group stands in front of D McL Wallace's shoeing and blacksmith workshop and beside a gas street light. A small boy sits at door to smithy watching blacksmith at work. On right of frame is Te Aroha Masonic Lodge, a one storey villa built as a Freemason lodge, on Bridge Street. Further up the street is a colonial English wooden church. Photograph taken in 1895 by Daniel Manders Beere.

Te Aroha Lodge, a Freemasons lodge, was built in 1884 in Bridge Street. The Freemasons later shifted to a larger hall in Rewi Street. The villa was converted to a residential dwelling for Oswald Caldwell and his wife Myra Caldwell. The villa building circa 2015 is the Te Aroha Health Organic Shop and Coffee House at 9 Lawrence Avenue.
