The essay gives an account of the life of Janet Lawson Brown who left her native Scotland as a young girl with her parents and other family members to immigrate to Australia. In 1865 she followed her fiance George May Bannan to New Zealand from Melbourne and married ten days later. They stayed in Auckland only a short time before going to the South Island where they opened a store at Little Grey Junction on the West Coast. The essay also traces the lives of Janet and George's children
