Ellis, William Wade, d 1785 :A woman of New Zealand. W. Ellis Feb.y 1777
- Date
- 1777
- Reference
- A-264-003
- Description
The head and shoulders of a young woman, with short curly hair, wearing a drop earring in her left ear, her right shoulder and chest covered with a draped cloth.
Joppien / Smith number for this drawing is 3.26
Detailed catalogue prepared by the South Sea Library London, accompanies drawings in box A-264
Joppien and Smith suggest that this might be a young Tahitian woman on the grounds of a hairstyle unlike Ellis and Webber's other drawings of Maori women and because of the drop earring. However other drawings of the early period show drop ear adornments on Maori women and short curly hair was the norm.
