The essay covers the period 1839-1957 and details the lives of two Sykes brothers who married Child sisters. William Sykes married Elizabeth (Betsy) Child, and George Skyes married Jane Child, all from Yorkshire. The two couples immigrated to New Zealand on the Bolton in 1839 and settled first in Wellington and then the Hutt Valley. The essay also details the life and family of Robert Wyeth who arrived in Wellington on the Cuba in 1839 and settled in Hutt Valley.
