Description

Exhibition caption reads - Despite the 'blossoming' of free trade between the two countries under CER, New Zealand continues to see the continuing exclusion of New Zealand apples from the Australian market as another devious ploy - like the notorious 'underarm bowling' incident. Australians say New Zealand apples have fireblight, a bacterial disease; New Zealand apple growers claim it attacks the blossoms and the fruit is unaffected. The Australian government says it is a quarantine issue; New Zealand calls it a restrictive trade practice. The situation has been further muddied by recent claims that fireblight has been discovered in Australia.

Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Grant of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library Gallery from 28 November 2001 to 24 February 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation. Also exhibited at X Space Gallery, Auckland University of Technology, Auckland in mid-March 2002 and at Old Parliament House, Canberra, Australia from 26 March 2003 to 29 June 2003.
