Description

Geological sketch of the middle and southern part of the South Island, from Mantell's route from Akaroa to Kaiapoi, south along the coast to Dunedin and return by sea. Names (mostly in Maori) rivers, coastal areas and lakes. Stuarts (Stewart) Island is shown. Shows Maori tracks from interior lakes to the coast, with travel times in days. Marks 'wahi pounamu', route of the author's track, and the boundary of the land block purchased by Commissioner Henry Tacy Kemp, JP. Also marks rock type as per reference key, including slate and quartz conglomerate, limestone, diluvial, tertiary and green gritty marl.

Written on reverse in pencil: Dr Mantell [with address that is difficult to decipher]
