Head and shoulders portrait of a young Maori manl, dressed in a shirt and cravat. He was Maketu Waretotara, the son of Ruhe, a Waimate chief
Maketu was tried for multiple murder at the Bay of Islands in November 1841 and executed in Auckland on 7 March 1842. There is another portrait of him on page 11 of the album, with his statement on page 101. In the British Library is another version in pencil in the Grey Album, Add. Ms 19953, f. 78 pl. 218. and a watercolour in the same Album, f.45, pl. 132. In addition there is a copy by Edward Shortland in the Hocken Library.
This version has been drawn to fit within the embossed border frame in the Album
Inscriptions: Verso - handwritten in pencil on page numbered 142: Maketu. Fist man tried by English law and hanged for murder. He was allowed to escape several times by the English who feared that [sic] consequences of hanging him but he was brought back by his own people
