Map of the coast line of the provincial district of Hawke's Bay, from Mahia southwards to the Waimata River depicting the Maori names of topographical features such as rivers, capes and islands. Has some place names.
Some of the names on the map are Waikawa, Kini Kini, Waikopopu and Kahutara (Mahia); Waiohinganga [river] which enters the Ko te Wanganui o Roto, Ahuriri and Mataruahou (Napier); Mutu Mawi (Te Matau a Maui - Cape Kidnappers) and Paoanui, Tuingara and Parimaha (near Pourerere).
Includes an accompanying letter from Horace Baker, Chief Surveyor Napier District Office, to the Surveyor-General, stamped 3064/2, with a note 'To be forwarded to Mr White, Native Department, ... 1879'.
This information was provided by the Chief Surveyor of the Survey Office Napier to the Surveyor General, Wellington and then transferred to the Native Department.
