Carte de visite portrait of Tiopira Kaukau Apatari of Kihitu (on the northern shoreline of Ngamotu Lagoon, Wairoa), wearing a korowai (tag cloak), taken in the 1870s by Samuel Carnell of Napier.
Dated from negative.
Identified from "The story of old Wairoa and the East Coast", by T Lambert, illustration facing p 665.
The korowai appears in other portraits by Carnell, and was probably owned by the studio.
