Album of photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1900s.
Most of the views are taken from a ferry on the Whanganui River; stretches of the river; kainga (villages); groups of Maori on the riverbanks; a low-lying waka with two men in it; and a scene of passengers disembarking.
There are a number of views of Paranui Pa, including an overall view, groups of Maori children, including one entitled `Haka for a penny'; a kaumatua seated in a doorway, by himself in one image, and with two children in a second image.
One view of a gathering for the Missions to Seamen; two portraits of a young woman, taken from different angles (possibly Emma Jane Barltrop).

Description: View of Te Ana-o-Tu-whaka-airi-au cave on banks of Whanganui River. Waterfalls over mouth of cave and dense bush foilage are visible. Located near to scenic area on the river known as The Drop Scene (Aratira) and opposite the Puraroto Cave. Photograph probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1900s. Cave is referred to in account of conflict beteeen Maori chief Whaka Nene and the Pipiriki people (see T.W. Downes 'History of, and Guide to the Wanganui River, Wanganui Herald newspaper Company, 1921 pg.47). Source of descriptive information - Inscription on album page.
