The party was organised to search for three school teachers, B Robbins, H D Smith, and R K Loney, who went missing during a trip from Hokitika to the Bealey in January 1932. Robbins and Smith died but Loney was found by a search party and survived. This event was known as the Harman Pass Tragedy.
