- Description
Drawing shows John Guard (1831-1918) as a baby, being snatched from the arms of a Maori man by a European soldier, while a second soldier points a pistol at the Maori man. Three further soldiers are on top of a hill to the right, firing at a party of Maori moving along a coastal path. The Marlborough Sounds are in the background and a ship is standing out to sea.
This drawing is based on the original oil painting by C Watson, now held at Te Papa Tongarewa.
Extended Title - Copy from a painting by C Watson, painted in 1895. This painting was in the possession of the Guard family in 1933, and is reproduced in: MacDonald, C A. Pages from the past. Blenheim [1933] f. p.56.
