Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom right - S S Penguin. Wellington
The `Penguin' was built by Messrs Todd & McGregor, in Glasgow in 1864 and was operated by the Union Steam Ship Co from 1879. In February 12, 1909, she struck a rock in Cook Strait, foundered, and 75 lives were lost. (Information from Rex Hardy's `Ships with New Zealand Association', Vol 7, 33)
