Contains correspondence, probably draft letters, by McLean in his capacity as the Chief Protector of Aboriginal Affairs about the state of native affairs in the districts of Taranaki (Waitara & Mokau), Whanganui and Taupo. Concerns mainly the question of Maori occupation in the Taranaki region with some brief historical background reports relating to the above areas.
McLean makes observations on the changing nature of rangatiratanga among the Maori of the Taranaki region due to the after effects of the wars with the Waikato tribes
