Photograph of Maori soldiers and civilians at Papawai Pa, Greytown. Sir James Carroll (standing, centre) and Richard Seddon (on ground, with cloak) are also present. Taken by Frederick William Vosseler circa 1900.
Papawai Pa was the seat of the Maori Parliament in the 1890s; it fell into disrepair in the years following World War I; this photograph may have been taken at one of the patriotic gatherings held at Papawai during the Boer War, or at an important Royal occasion; the soldiers may be members of the Wairarapa Maori Mounted Rifles
