Description

"Q" 17, steam locomotive (2-4-4T type). There is a railway employee with a child standing at the front of the engine, with two other railwaymen by the cab. The maker's name, visible on the engine, is Rogers. This glass negative taken by Albert Percy Godber from an image by an unidentified photographer.

Inscriptions: Album page - left of image - "Q" old.; Photographer's title on negative - bottom centre - 1878. Scrapped 1894.; Album page - centre right - W Smart.

\"Q\" class no. 17 steam locomotive was built by Rogers (maker's no. 2512/78), went into service in August 1879, and was written off in 1898. Information from \"Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971\" by W G Lloyd. Information in Godber Album Vol 108, p 41 (PA1-q-101) differs, saying it was scrapped in 1894.
