Private W J Brown (standing), Corporal A J Spence (lying in foreground) and 2nd Lieutenant C W Taylor (leaning against olive tree), photographed with a captured camera on 20 May 1941, the first day of the battle of Crete, by Tom Foley. The box in the fork of the tree holds the party's supplies. The men are from Signals Platoon, Headquarters Company, 19th (Wellington) Battalion, 2NZEF.
Jeff Spence had received an aircraft cannon shell in the right leg, blowing the quad muscle out of the leg. Tom Foley pushed the muscle, which was severed at the top, back into position and heavily bandaged it, using his emergency supply of three bandages. The leg was saved. Buck Taylor received a shrapnel wound in the left hand.
The photographic print held by the Library was printed in reverse from the original negative. This digital image has been reversed to show the correct orientation.
