Description

Shows a bearded man in a kilt and tam-o'shanter walking away arm in arm with a pig-tailed Chinese man.

This cartoon may refer to Mackenzie's objection to the poll tax being levied on Chinese returning to New Zealand. The Hawera & Normanby Star, 14 August 1896, Page 2 reports: "Mr T. Mackenzie moved to reduce the poll-tax from £100 to £50, which was negatived by 45 to 5. On the third reading the member for Clutha took exception to the new clause making it compulsory for a Chinese to pay polltax every time he returned to the colony after a visit from its shores".
