Description

Abel Tasman's ships the Zeehaen and the Heemskerck, close to Three Kings Islands, with two Maori men outlined against the skyline.

Engraved by Frederik Ottens from drawings (now in the Dutch National Archives in den Haag) by Isaac Gilsemans, made on Tasman's voyage to New Zealand in December 1642.

This view, with its apparently large figures of Maori outlined against the sky, compared with the reduced size of Tasman's ships in the foreground, is thought to have given rise to the European belief that Maori were giants.
